Four steps to ADHD medication
Step 1: Free consultation
A free scheduled call with a Melios specialist including a screening questionnaire, with next steps shared if you’re suitable to progress to an initial medication appointment.
Step 2: Initial medication appointment
A virtual video appointment with our prescriber including a health check and personal details shared to create a tailored medication plan, with a prescription issued if suitable.
Step 3: Guided titration phase
Within 7 days you’ll receive a follow up phone call from your prescriber, followed by regular video appointments to review and adjust treatment until medication is stable.
Step 4: Shared care review
Once stabilised, we can either transfer your prescribing to your GP through a shared care agreement (with your consent) or continue prescribing privately with annual reviews if shared care isn’t possible.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an ADHD diagnosis before I can start medication?
Yes, medication can only be prescribed once you’ve had an ADHD assessment and diagnosis. Currently we are only able to offer medication to adults who have received an ADHD diagnosis with Melios.
What types of ADHD medication are available for adults?
There are two main types of ADHD medication; stimulant medications and non-stimulant medications. Each works in different ways to help manage symptoms. During the initial medication assessment, we’ll explore both options to understand the most suitable medication.
How does ADHD medication work?
ADHD medication works by affecting certain chemicals in your brain that help with focus, attention, and impulse control. Medication can help to better manage ADHD symptoms.
Is ADHD medication my only option?
No, you do not have to take ADHD medication. If ADHD symptoms are impacting your daily life, you may wish to consider medication to better manage ADHD symptoms. At Melios, our medication journey starts with a free consultation with a Melios specialist to explore the prescribing service. If suitable to proceed, we will share further information including next steps to progress you to the initial medication appointment. Most people are suitable but we may require additional information to ensure safety.
When will I be prescribed medication?
If medication is clinically right for you, one of our prescribing clinicians will agree a personalised plan for you in your initial medication appointment. If appropriate, medication will be prescribed the same day.
How will I receive my ADHD medication prescription?
Your prescribing clinician will issue a paper prescription, which will be sent to your home address. Once you’ve received it, you can take the prescription to your local pharmacy, pay the prescription charge and collect your ADHD medication.
How long does it take to find the right dose?
Some people find the right dose quickly, while for others it may take a number of months. We’ll check in regularly and adjust the medication until it is working well for you.
Is ADHD medication addictive?
When taken as prescribed, ADHD medication is not addictive. Your medication and symptoms will be monitored closely to ensure your treatment is working effectively.
Will I need to take medication forever?
Not necessarily. Some people use ADHD medication long-term, while others take it during certain life stages. This decision is made jointly with your prescriber based on how you respond.
Can I drink alcohol or caffeine while taking ADHD medication?
Both alcohol and caffeine can interact with ADHD symptoms and medication, but often small amounts are ok. We’ll provide you with comprehensive advice, and closely monitor health.
What are the possible side effects?
ADHD medication can cause side effects. The most common side effects include trouble sleeping, changes in appetite, or feeling more anxious. If you are concerned at any stage, please reach out to your prescriber for support.
How often will my ADHD medication be reviewed?
Your medication will be reviewed regularly, especially during the first month, to monitor and adjust your dose if needed. Our ADHD prescribing package includes one 60-minute initial medication appointment, a 15-minute follow up phone call, three 30-minute titration reviews and a shared care review.
What do I do if I need urgent help between appointments?
Whilst Melios is here to support you or your family with neurodevelopmental services, we are not an emergency or crisis service. If you need urgent help, please call 999 or visit your nearest A&E. You can also find support and useful contact details on the Healios website (our parent company).
